#9 Barrel Pattern Training, & Pole Bending Training
🛢BARREL TRAINING
After foundation/basics are solid and TLC drills can be done correct at walk, trot and lope, below is what a beginning barrel pattern should look like. TLC Barrels is based on being consistent in teaching the pattern based on an arc and 3 spots in the turns(spot 1 entrance, spot 2 backside, spot 3 exit). Barrels should be taught perfect at the walk before trot/jog and then with transitions like lope/trot until confident before next speed is added like high lope/slow lope consistently. Arc & spots can vary based on a horse's size, style & stride. The arc can be 6 to 8 foot on at catty little horse, 10 to 12 foot on average horse & 15 foot on big stride, big motor, stiffer style type horse. Spot or Pocket around barrel to spot 1 entrance will be 3 foot on catty lil horse, 4 foot on average horse, 5 foot on big bubba horse. Spot 2 backside, always get horse’s hind end to it, with about same pocket as spot 1. Exit spot 3 you usually finish at 3 foot in slow work. In slow work you can work 2 or 3 perfect 5 foot circles as a tune up around barrel for the horse that has a ton of rate & turn and finish tight like a true turn or a free runner that needs collection work and to relax in turns.
In competition & in training know how to get a horse in the hole, & where your pivot spot is.
Also how to keep a horse 4WD puling with shoulders & pushing with hips.

#10 Foundation Training! Basics before barrels training.
TLC Program believes a horse should know the following before training for Barrels; (all at stand walk trot and lope where applies) loose rein whoa, face flex laterally(left, right), vertically (down, break in the poll), leg laterals/two-tracking, hind-end disengage, roll backs, counter arc, backing straight & circles, lead departures from circle & straight lines preferred, nose in & out drills circles & straight lines, transitions from extended to collected off body, shoulder & hip control, perfect circles and all off as light of cues possible from energy, eyes, voice body, legs & hands.
